Finding the most searched for keywords for your business is truly an art form. Search engine optimization has evolved so much over the last decade and algorithms are still constantly changing and evolving. Still, mastering things like search engines and search engine optimization (SEO), search volume, long-tail keywords, click-through rates, and keyword phrases, is the best way to get organic traffic to your website. If you do it right, you won’t even have to pay to get your website at the top of Google’s search results.

 

But, how do you do it right? It’s not as simple as repeating keywords anymore. Words matter. What words you use and how you use them are the key to getting it right. This is probably the easiest way to get some basic keywords that will work for your niche. If you start typing search terms into Google, it autocompletes a list of possible things you might be interested in searching for. The idea is to make it easy for people to find what they’re looking for without having to come up with the exact search term on their own.

 

If you want a fast way to get the most commonly searched for terms in your market, give this a try. You will get some ideas but bear in mind that the results are limited to what Google thinks you’re really trying to sell.

 

2. Look at the Related Searches

At the bottom of a page of search results is a list of other related keywords and phrases that could also give you keywords to try for your site. These are quite often just reworded versions of what you searched for initially but in the SEO game, word order and placement are very important.

 

For example, if you’re searching for “SEO tips,” you’ll see at the bottom of the page some other terms to use: SEO tips 2018, SEO tips for beginners, and even SEO tips Google. But this strategy is a little limiting. Take a look at another example. If you search for “cars,” the related searches vary drastically: cars movie, best online car buying sites, best-used car websites, and Cars Disney.

If you go this route, remember to keep in mind what you’re trying to do. If you want to sell used cars to people, it’s probably better not to target people searching for a kids’ movie.

 

3. Approach Direct Sales More Directly

If you’re trying to directly sell your product to people who are specifically searching for it, examining a comparable Amazon listing is a great way to get some ideas. Amazon’s whole purpose is to sell things and they have mastered it. It’s likely that you’ve searched for information about something and had Amazon listings show up as the first few search results even when you’re not shopping! Another good place to look is eBay. By comparing the two, you can come up with a pretty good list of words and phrases to use.

Also, don’t shy away from using your product name directly. Why? Because if someone searches for the exact thing you’re offering, it’s likely they’re willing to buy it right away. If they find it on your site, you have a great chance of making a sale.

 

4. Solve a Problem

Read customer reviews of your competition and find the things that they’re complaining about. The phrases that keep coming up are the ones you’re looking for. For anyone interested in buying that product, they’ll likely see the concerns of other people and wonder if there’s a better option. Your product is the better option. Address these concerns and you might get the business your competition is losing.

 

5. Look at Your Current Stats

 

One thing you can do is look at the keywords that people are currently using to find their way to your site. This is a great way to get some basic data so that you can expand on what’s already working.
